Overview Gladen B.A.R.N.I.E
B.A.R.N.I.E. is a binaural measurement system specifically developed for the acoustic requirements of modern in-vehicle audio systems.
The focus is not on measuring idealized reference points, but on capturing the actual sound field at the listening position.
Conventional measurement microphones typically capture only a single point in space. B.A.R.N.I.E. follows a different approach:
Using two selected and calibrated microphones arranged in a binaural configuration, the acoustic event is recorded as it is perceived by a human listener — including all time-related, phase-related, and frequency-dependent differences between the left and right ear.
Binaural Measurement at the Actual Listening Position
The positioning of the microphones is based on the natural ear location.
As a result, B.A.R.N.I.E. captures not only the level of individual speakers, but also interaural time differences (ITD) and interaural level differences (ILD). These parameters are critical for soundstage reproduction, localization, and depth layering.
The system therefore measures not “acoustic theory,” but the real acoustic conditions inside the vehicle cabin.
Analysis of Time Alignment, Phase, and Frequency Response
Inside a vehicle, different installation locations, distances, and reflections create complex interactions between speakers.
B.A.R.N.I.E. analyzes these relationships holistically.
-
Time alignment differences between channels
-
Relative phase relationships between individual speakers
-
Frequency response under real installation conditions
These data form the foundation for precise DSP tuning, where not isolated individual values, but the interaction of the entire system is optimized.
Foundation for Reproducible DSP Settings
The measurement data obtained with B.A.R.N.I.E. serve as an objective basis for the following adjustments:
-
Time alignment corrections
-
Phase adjustments
-
Equalizer settings
This enables DSP setups to be created in a reproducible and traceable manner.
Subjective fine-tuning remains possible, but it is based on a stable and measurable reference point.
Optimized for MOSCONI DSP Platforms
B.A.R.N.I.E. is an integral part of the GLADEN-MOSCONI calibration concept and was developed for seamless integration with MOSCONI DSP systems.
The measurement methodology is designed to implement DSP parameters efficiently and practically — particularly in multi-channel systems with complex speaker architectures.
Efficient Tuning of Complex Sound Systems
Especially in modern vehicles featuring:
-
Multi-way front systems
-
Center speakers
-
Subwoofer integration
-
Active rear setups
System calibration can quickly become complex and difficult to manage.
B.A.R.N.I.E. significantly reduces this effort, as the entire system is evaluated from the perspective of the listening position rather than analyzing each speaker individually.
